I just came across this story on the Canadian Army website. I think that it is very important to remember the people who gave their lives while serving our country and trying to help the people of Afghanistan. Here are some exerpts from the article.
TORONTO, Ontario — They are familiar to us all, all too
familiar. We have seen them on the nightly news, on the front pages of our daily
papers and on the Internet smiling back at us, so full of purpose and life. They
are the faces of the Canadians soldiers and one diplomat who have been killed in
Afghanistan, since 2002.Artist Joanne Tod is painting these faces on small birch ply
panels that will eventually make up a Canadian flag measuring 8' by 12', which
the artist hopes to sell. The proceeds will be donated to help military
families."I have no intention of making money from this myself," she
said. "I see myself as kind of a conduit," Joanne has a passion for her art and
subjects. It takes her about six hours to complete a portrait. Due to
the nature of her craft—painting on wood—she does not take any breaks until the
painting is complete. To date, she has painted the portraits of half of the
Canadians who have died in Afghanistan.
